Dehradun: Three weeks after Dehradun Nagar Nigam started night garbage pickup in 10 wards, residents said that it had only made a “marginal difference” in the cleanliness in the city and that the facility should be complemented with regular door-to-door waster collection during the day. Under its night service, the nigam picks up garbage from large dustbins after dark.
Residents said that areas which have flourished vegetable markets and thus more waster, have benefited from trash collection at night. In other areas, however, there was no “spectacular difference”, residents said. Dr Mahesh Bhandari, President, Doon Residents’ Welfare Front, said, “The initiative is a step in the right direction because with increasing population the garbage generated in the city has also increased. However, night garbage collection has not made as much difference as the nigam is claiming, probably becoz the service is not across the city. More steps need to be taken in this direction.”
Health officer, nagar nigam, Dr Kailash Gunjyal said, ” The night garbage collection is smooth and more efficient as vehicles are not hindered by traffic. We plan to privatise garbage collection entirely.”
