Major setback to the Lashkar-e-Toiba, the mastermind behind the Amarnath Yatra attack, Abu Ismail, was killed in a joint operation by security forces in Arigam in Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Official sources said the J&K police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which launched a hunt to track down Ismail and intelligence leads about his associates and their hideouts led to the killing. He is believed to be behind several attacks in south Kashmir.
Ismail could be the fourth top militant leader killed in Kashmir since last year. Hizbul Mujahideen leaders Burhan Wani and Sabzar Bhat were killed by the security forces in 2016.
In addition to these events, Abu Dujana a 27 year-old divisional commander of LeT for south Kashmir, and another militant were shot dead in an exchange of fir between militants and security forces in Pulwama.
